River Ground Water and Sediment Quality

Sediment Sampling

According to the current characterization of chemical contaminants in sediments, sediments are evaluated in a progressive manner, wherein specific contaminants present at levels of potential concern are first identified ,followed by more intensive sampling as determined appropriate to locate sources of contamination and then determine MSU`s contribution to the problem.

Method of Sediment Sampling

  • Composite samples comprising of three or more representative grab samples will be collected from each depositional area which is located  along or just below the concave bank of a curve in the stream,or among bars and eddies formed when the stream widens
  • Sample collection and transfer into clean glass containers with screw caps lined with Teflon and frozen until analysis.
  • Determination of depth of sediments at each sampling point by push rod or probes however only the surface layer will be collected for analysis in the initial phase of the study.
